Illustrator Shows How Disney Princesses Would Look Like If They Pursued Careers In 2018, And The Result Is Awesome

Everything Facebook launched at F8 and Why

Day 1 of Facebook’s F8 conference was packed with announcements and updates. Here are 10 big takeaways from Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote on Day 1. You can find full coverage and analysis of F8 here.

1. FaceDate

Facebook is launching a dating feature where you can volunteer to make a profile that’s only visible to non-friends who’ve also opted in to looking for love. Facebook will match you based on all its data, and messaging will happen in a dedicated inbox rather than Messenger.

Why: If Facebook wants to drive “meaningful connections,” it doesn’t get more meaningful than introducing you to your life partner. Facebook will have to be careful to keep everything private, as people already think it’s creepy or uncool. But investors love it, considering Tinder parent company Match Group’s share price fell 22 percent today.

2. “Clear History”

Facebook is building Clear History, a new privacy feature allowing users to delete data Facebook has collected from sites and apps that use its ads and analytics tool. This means you can scrub some of your browsing history from Facebook’s data store. Mark Zuckerberg likened this to deleting cookies from your browser history. It’s a nice gesture to the privacy-conscious, though it’ll make your Facebook experience less personalized.

Why: Zuckerberg faced tons of questions from Congress about data it collects from around the web. Users were pissed to learn they had little control over it. Clear History could quiet some cries for regulation.

3. Instagram video chat and anti-bullying

Instagram is launching video chat, which TechCrunch scooped in March when we spotted the feature buried in its Android app. Meanwhile, Instagram is also getting a new filter to protect users from bullying comments, plus an improved Explore tab.

Why: Instagram Direct messaging is super popular, but lacked video chat… which is also super popular on Messenger and WhatsApp. Combined with anti-bullying features, Instagram could become a safer and sillier place for teens to hang out — which is just what Facebook wants to defeat Snapchat.

4. Facebook is reopening its app review process

Facebook will re-open its app review process following the pause it took after the Cambridge Analytica crisis — welcome news for developers.

Why: Facebook couldn’t risk another sketchy app slipping through and selling user data, but it also has to keep developers loyal to its platform so they keep building experiences that attract users. Facebook was wise to balance safety and privacy with new developer capabilities today.

5. Oculus Go goes on sale for $199

Oculus Go, Facebook’s cheap and capable standalone VR headset, is now on sale. It costs $199 for the version with 32GB of onboard storage, and $249 for the 64GB variety.

Why: VR headsets where you have to stick your phone in are clumsy and prevent Facebook from controlling the whole experience. Instead of relying on the Samsung Gear headset shell and your iPhone or Android, Facebook gets to dictate everything about the perfect VR rig you can strap on first-timers.

6. Messenger simplifies and starts translation

Facebook is tiptoeing into translation of chat threads in Messenger, starting with English-Spanish convos in the U.S. within Marketplace. Meanwhile, Facebook is stripping out the camera and games tab to give Messenger a cleaner design.

Why: Translation could deliver on the Facebook promise of bringing the world closer together by eradicating language barriers and letting people realize how much they have in common. But Messenger was getting way too bloated with so many new features, so the simplification should let the actually useful ones shine.

7. Introducing VR Memories and 3D photos

Facebook is bringing 3D illustrations and models to the News Feed. It’s also going to turn 2D photos into VR memories — 3D environments you can explore using a trippy point cloud design.

Why: Facebook wants to stay ahead of the content trends and be the home of future formats. They might seem like a novelty today, but at least they keep Facebook interesting.

8. WhatsApp hits 450 million stories users

WhatsApp’s Snapchat Stories clone WhatsApp Status now has 450 million daily active users. That’s well over 2X the user count of Snapchat’s whole app. And WhatsApp is also adding stickers and group video calling.

Why: This is a big deal because Snapchat had a disastrous earnings call today where it sank to its slowest user growth rate ever, while WhatsApp Status continues its explosive growth. Snapchat neglected the international market at first, and now WhatsApp has beaten it to the punch worldwide.

9. Sharing to Facebook and Instagram Stories from other apps

Starting with Spotify, SoundCloud and GoPro, other apps can share photos and videos directly to Stories inside Facebook and Instagram.

Why: Facebook wants to make its Stories more interesting than Snapchat’s. And this new wing of the platform could create a massive opportunity for music discovery, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Myspace.

10. Oculus TV

Oculus wants you to watch TV inside its new Go headset. At first you’ll get Facebook Watch, but expect apps like Netflix and Hulu to arrive eventually.

Why: There just aren’t enough great VR experiences, but perhaps Facebook can get people spending more time in their headsets by creating a virtual big screen for 2D content.

Meghan Markle, Black Royalty in a Castle of White Privilege

After a lawyer’s racist rant went viral, a mariachi band showed up outside his apartment.

Aaron Schlossberg may not lose his license to practice law, but he still has had to face the music.

After being caught on camera in a threatening and racist rant against restaurant employees who were speaking Spanish, critics are calling for the New York attorney to lose his ability to practice law.

While that's unlikely to happen, he's still endured real consequences of losing his office space, generating a ton of one-star Yelp reviews, and facing an avalanche of very public criticism from a united Latinx community and countless allies who are saying "no" to his xenophobic rant.

The public's response sends a powerful message that New Yorkers won't tolerate racism.

That response culminated when a group of local activists organized a community event, highlighted by a mariachi band that played music like "La Cucaracha" outside Schlossberg's Manhattan apartment.

New York City residents have loudly responded by saying there's no place for racism and intolerance in their city.

And they're weighing in with their wallets, too. A GoFundMe campaign launched to raise $500 for the mariachi band raised more than twice that amount in just a few hours. In fact, the band reportedly offered to perform for free, and some of the extra funds were used to bring food to the event.

The GoFundMe organizers quickly cut off the donations button and instead asked those who wanted to help to contribute directly to The Immigrant Defense Project, a nonprofit that helps provide legal counsel and representation for undocumented people facing deportation.

The message of unity that arose from the incident is important.

It might be more immediately satisfying to see Schlossberg punished for his outlandish behavior, but sending a powerful message of unity in response is likely to have a greater impact than any professional consequences endured by one bad apple.

This incident is a good reminder that the United States has no official language. While most Americans consider English their primary language, as the saying goes: We are still a nation of immigrants, even if the current administration thinks otherwise.

People are angry, and that's understandable. But a response like this will have a lasting impact.

Schlossberg used his privilege to threaten and demean others without provocation. We still don't even know if the employees were citizens, immigrants, or undocumented. And in the most fundamental way, it does not matter.

They were simply doing their jobs like most of us do on any given day. Everyone has to eat, and most of us have to work.

That's why the overwhelming response to Schlossberg is far more important than his heinous act itself. A message of inclusion, unity, and tolerance is winning out, and it's one that won't be ignored.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Could Blac Chyna be pregnant AGAIN??

The pregnancy rumors were further fueled thanks to a leopard print hoodie/leggings set by Married To The Mob. Supposedly, the ensem made it seem as though Chyna already had a popped belly. While we're not entirely sold on the supposed evidence, you can take a peek at the pic HERE.

Unsurprisingly, fans have already flocked to Twitter to voice their opinions on the rumor! They wrote:

Seattle passes new tax on large companies despite Amazons howls of protest

Seattle’s city council voted unanimously to approve a new tax on the largest employers in the city, despite strong opposition by Amazon and other affected companies. The tax, on companies with more than $20 million in receipts, will amount to about $275 per employee and is intended for use in improving conditions for the city’s homeless.

The original proposal was nearly twice that, but was amended as a compromise measure after local businesses protested. Amazon was the most visible of them, making the dramatic public threat of suspending construction of one of its many skyscrapers in the city and repurposing another.

While the idea that a company would simply abandon a multi-million-dollar investment halfway isn’t really credible, changes to its scheduling, budget and usage plan would certainly affect local contractors — which is why many of the latter showed up to oppose the tax on Amazon’s behalf. A heated confrontation occurred between opponents and proponents gathered in front of Amazon’s Spheres earlier this month.

The idea of laborers lobbying in favor of Amazon, which is frequently decried as an extremely labor-unfriendly company, seems odd, but in this case at least the train of thought is clear. It should also be mentioned that Amazon has worked to ease the plight of Seattle homeless with a planned shelter at the base of one of its buildings and other contributions.

Zillow and Expedia also voiced concerns, alongside many other local businesses, in an open letter. “We oppose this approach, because of the message it sends to every business: if you are investing in growth, if you create too many jobs in Seattle, you will be punished,” the letter reads in part.

Although opposition seems to have succeeded in reducing the tax burden, it did little to convince the council that the tax itself was unsound, as today’s vote indicates.

“This progressive revenue stream balances the needs of our small business community, while ensuring we have the funding we need to provide critical housing and health services,” said Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda in a statement accompanying the vote. GeekWire was at the meeting and has some other interesting quotes from both sides.

The modified tax should generate some $50 million, much of which will be dedicated to “deeply affordable” housing in the city to be made available to people below the poverty line, with some going to emergency shelters and other social services. Around $11 million of that will come from Amazon. This would significantly increase (in fact, nearly double based on some estimates) existing spending along these lines.

The tax would last for five years, after which it would have to be reauthorized.

Amazon, for its part, seems to have abandoned its immediate threats for new, more vague ones. In a statement from VP Drew Herdener provided to TechCrunch, it said:

We are disappointed by today’s City Council decision to introduce a tax on jobs. While we have resumed construction planning for Block 18, we remain very apprehensive about the future created by the council’s hostile approach and rhetoric toward larger businesses, which forces us to question our growth here.

Fasting For Just A Day Can Regenerate Your Stem Cells

Researchers have been able to reverse the age-related loss of functionality in intestinal stem cells in a very simple way. A 24-hour fast has been shown to dramatically improve how these important cells regenerate in both old and young mice.

The study, reported in Cell Stem Cell, looked at the effect of diet on the gut cells of young and old mice. What the researchers discovered was that after just a single day of fasting, the cells underwent a switch in behavior. They stopped burning carbohydrates and started burning fat. And once the cells started burning fatty acids their functionality got better.

“Intestinal stem cells are the workhorses of the intestine that give rise to more stem cells and to all of the various differentiated cell types of the intestine. Notably, during aging, intestinal stem function declines, which impairs the ability of the intestine to repair itself after damage,” senior author professor Omer Yilmaz, from MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, said in a statement. “In this line of investigation, we focused on understanding how a 24-hour fast enhances the function of young and old intestinal stem cells.”

What the team realized is that once the mice began fasting, certain transcription factors – proteins that help convert DNA to RNA – activated. They are called PPARs. When they are switched off the cells can’t burn fatty acids, and the analysis showed that when this happens the cells can no longer boost regeneration. The reverse is also true. The team activated the PPARs while the mice were not fasting and still got the beneficial effect.

“That was also very surprising,” co-lead author Chia-Wei Cheng added. “Just activating one metabolic pathway is sufficient to reverse certain age phenotypes.”

The findings are really important. The discovery that fasting helps the intestines regenerate is important in its own right, but combining it with the potential of simply using a drug to obtain the same effect makes this a key study for medical interventions on the lower digestive system. It could, for example, help patients recovering from chemotherapy or gastrointestinal infections.

The team is now curious to find out whether cells in other parts of the body also have this capability. Fasting or the use of the drug could boost tissue longevity in many different organs.

Mario Batali Booted From Restaurant Group After ‘Chilling And Deeply Disturbing’ New Sexual Assault Claims Surface!

Not good news for Mario Batali!!

Serious rape and sexual assault allegations have been flying around Monday morning, and just hours after those reports surfaced, it appears at least one restaurant group is DONE with Batali for good!

Related: Nev Schulman May've Shoved A Girl Outside A Texas Bar

According to reports coming out in TMZ, Batali is being dumped by soon-to-be-former business partner B&B Hospitality Group, which had gone in on restaurant projects with the famed TV chef in the past.

The company is currently in active negotiations to buy out Batali and send him on his way from any further restaurant ventures they may have.

B&B released their own statement just hours ago about the alleged rape and sexual assault, calling the new allegations against Batali "chilling and deeply disturbing."

This isn't the first time Batali has come into the crosshairs over allegations of sexual misconduct; don't forget that bizarre non-apology he released just a few months ago when another sexual assault allegation first surfaced. You know, the one where he also shared a cinnamon roll recipe with his statement.

Not in great taste…

Now, with more allegations piling on top, it's clear that the restaurant group wants nothing to do with this man. And this is a big deal — Batali was a founding member of the B&B Hospitality Group almost exactly 20 years ago.

We'll continue to report back on any continued fall out around Batali from these allegations.

Facebook reveals 25 pages of takedown rules for hate speech and more

Facebook has never before made public the guidelines its moderators use to decide whether to remove violence, spam, harassment, self-harm, terrorism, intellectual property theft, and hate speech from social network until now. The company hoped to avoid making it easy to game these rules, but that worry has been overridden by the public’s constant calls for clarity and protests about its decisions. Today Facebook published 25 pages of detailed criteria and examples for what is and isn’t allowed.

Facebook is effectively shifting where it will be criticized to the underlying policy instead of individual incidents of enforcement mistakes like when it took down posts of the newsworthy “Napalm Girl” historical photo because it contains child nudity before eventually restoring them. Some groups will surely find points to take issue with, but Facebook has made some significant improvements. Most notably, it no longer disqualifies minorities from shielding from hate speech because an unprotected characteristic like “children” is appended to a protected characteristic like “black”.

Nothing is technically changing about Facebook’s policies. But previously, only leaks like a copy of an internal rulebook attained by the Guardian had given the outside world a look at when Facebook actually enforces those policies. These rules will be translated into over 40 languages for the public. Facebook currently has 7500 content reviewers, up 40% from a year ago.

Facebook also plans to expand its content removal appeals process, It already let users request a review of a decision to remove their profile, Page, or Group. Now Facebook will notify users when their nudity, sexual activity, hate speech or graphic violence content is removed and let them hit a button to “Request Review”, which will usually happen within 24 hours. Finally, Facebook will hold Facebook Forums: Community Standards events in Germany, France, the UK, India, Singapore, and the US to give its biggest communities a closer look at how the social network’s policy works.

Fixing the “white people are protected, black children aren’t” policy

Facebook’s VP of Global Product Management Monika Bickert who has been coordinating the release of the guidelines since September told reporters at Facebook’s Menlo Park HQ last week that “There’s been a lot of research about how when institutions put their policies out there, people change their behavior, and that’s a good thing.” She admits there’s still the concern that terrorists or hate groups will get better at developing “workarounds” to evade Facebook’s moderators, “but the benefits of being more open about what’s happening behind the scenes outweighs that.”

Content moderator jobs at various social media companies including Facebook have been described as hellish in many exposes regarding what it’s like to fight the spread of child porn, beheading videos, racism for hours a day. Bickert says Facebook’s moderators get trained to deal with this and have access to counseling and 24/7 resources, including some on-site. They can request to not look at certain kinds of content they’re sensitive to. But Bickert didn’t say Facebook imposes an hourly limit on how much offensive moderators see per day like how YouTube recently implemented a four-hour limit.

A controversial slide depicting Facebook’s now-defunct policy that disqualified subsets of protected groups from hate speech shielding. Image via ProPublica

The most useful clarification in the newly revealed guidelines explains how Facebook has ditched its poorly received policy that deemed “white people” as protected from hate speech, but not “black children”. That rule that left subsets of protected groups exposed to hate speech was blasted in a ProPublica piece in June 2017, though Facebook said it no longer applied that policy.

Now Bickert says “Black children — that would be protected. White men — that would also be protected. We consider it an attack if it’s against a person, but you can criticize an organization, a religion . . . If someone says ‘this country is evil’, that’s something that we allow. Saying ‘members of this religion are evil’ is not.” She explains that Facebook is becoming more aware of the context around who is being victimized. However, Bickert notes that if someone says “‘I’m going to kill you if you don’t come to my party’, if it’s not a credible threat we don’t want to be removing it.”

Do community standards = editorial voice?

Being upfront about its policies might give Facebook more to point to when it’s criticized for failing to prevent abuse on its platform. Activist groups say Facebook has allowed fake news and hate speech to run rampant and lead to violence in many developing countries where Facebook hasn’t had enough native speaking moderators. The Sri Lankan government temporarily blocked Facebook in hopes of ceasing calls for violence, and those on the ground say Zuckerberg overstated Facebook improvements to the problem in Myanmar that led to hate crimes against the Rohingya people.

Revealing the guidelines could at least cut down on confusion about whether hateful content is allowed on Facebook. It isn’t. Though the guidelines also raise the question of whether the Facebook value system it codifies means the social network has an editorial voice that would define it as a media company. That could mean the loss of legal immunity for what its users post. Bickert stuck to a rehearsed line that “We are not creating content and we’re not curating content”. Still, some could certainly say all of Facebook’s content filters amount to a curatorial layer.

But whether Facebook is a media company or a tech company, it’s a highly profitable company. It needs to spend some more of the billions it earns each quarter applying the policies evenly and forcefully around the world.
