Surrogate Gave Away Twins Then Discovered That One Of The Babies Was Actually Her Own

Despite being one of the most natural things in our world, pregnancy is still a pretty huge deal, especially if you’re pregnant with more than one child. When carrying two babies in a cramped little womb, complications can arise very easily.

However, most people won’t experience any pregnancies as complicated and bizarre as Jessica Allen’s. You probably didn’t think it was even possible to become pregnant when you already have a bun in the oven, but apparently it is! That’s exactly what happened to Jessica: she fell pregnant twice within the “same pregnancy”. Ultimately she gave birth to two babies at the same time, but because they weren’t conceived at the same time, they weren’t twins. In fact, they weren’t even full siblings, or half siblings… The strange thing is, they weren’t even related at all! The newborn babies had two entirely different parents! But how is that even possible you ask? Well, it all began when Jessica, a 31-year-old mom from California, decided to undergo IVF in the spring of 2016. It wasn’t the desire to have children of her own that triggered her decision to receive the fertility treatment. She already had kids with her partner, Jasper, and was simply looking to earn money from being a surrogate mother. According to the New York Post, she became a surrogate for a Chinese couple who were willing to pay her $30,000 for her services. Not many people are aware of this fact, but California is actually one of the few states in the US which legally allows women to earn money by carrying out a surrogacy pregnancy. Then Jessica found out something extraordinary when she was about six weeks pregnant. She attended a routine ultrasound, but wasn’t expecting to hear anything other than how the baby was getting on. Whether or not he or she was developing in the right way, if he or she appeared to be healthy etc. The very last thing Jessica was expecting to hear from the doctor was that she was pregnant with twins! When the biological parents were alerted to the news, they agreed to increase the initial $30,000 to $35,000. They were thrilled at the prospect of becoming parents to twins. Little did they know, that was far from the truth. Ultimately, their dream family turned out much differently. In December of 2016, Jessica gave birth to two baby boys via cesarean section, and as agreed they were both handed over to their “biological parents”. Even after the birth, everyone was completely unaware of the fact that whilst one of the babies belonged to the couple, the other was Jessica’s own flesh and blood. It took an entire month for the truth to come out, and it happened in a manner that Jessica really wasn’t expecting. Entirely out of the blue, she received a photo of the two baby boys from the couple with the following message: “They are not the same, right? Have you thought about why they are different?” “I did notice that one was much lighter than the other,” Jessica explained to ABC News. “You know, obviously they were not identical twins.” Of course there have been numerous cases in which nonidentical twins have inherited two entirely different skin colors. Alison Spooner and Dean Durrant are parents from the UK and something incredibly rare happened when they had kids for the first time. While one of their daughters was fairly pale, her sister clearly had a much darker complexion. It was rare enough that this happened the first time, but then it happened again, and to the same couple! However, this was not the case for the Chinese couple, and this was confirmed by DNA tests. Now both parties were aware that the lighter child, of Chinese descent, was the Chinese couple’s baby and the darker baby was Jessica and Jasper’s baby, a mixed race child. “I don’t know how to describe it… we were floored,” Jessica added. “We were like, how did this happen?” While this may seem like a story that has stemmed from a Sci-fi movie, it is actually a very real, yet incredibly rare occurrence. It is known as “superfetation” and the reason it almost never occurs is because when women are pregnant their bodies typically release hormones to stop ovulation. Evidently, Jessica did not stop ovulating during her pregnancy, and during one instance of sexual intercourse with her partner, she released an egg that was fertilized by his sperm. Jessica very candidly told her story to the New York Post, delving into how becoming a surrogate ended up giving her a child of her own:

“I don’t regret becoming a surrogate mom because that would mean regretting my son. I just hope other women considering surrogacy can learn from my story. And that a greater good will come out of this nightmare.”

It may seem like a bizarre story, but ultimately it ended in something extraordinarily special: Jessica and her partner Jasper had an unexpectedly new addition to the family. Of course the whole debacle was far from easy, and before the couple were granted custody of their biological son, they had to endure a very gruelling legal process. We wish both sets of parents the best of luck for their futures, and hope that if they go on to have more kids, the road there will be a lot less complicated! Of course “twin pregnancies” aren’t usually that complicated. More often than not, when your doctor tells you you’re pregnant with twins, they’ll actually be related, like these gorgeous, giggling babies:
