Those who are transgender go through struggles that cisgender people could not imagine. From an early age, gender dysphoria consumes their every thought, and they are faced with the arduous decision of whether or not to live their life as their authentic selves.
Thanks to modern medicine, it is now possible for transgender people to align their physicality with their gender. The first sex change took place in the 1930s, but it was unsuccessful, and it wasn’t until the 1960s that the procedure became commonplace. After living a lie for 40 years, 56-year-old Fulvia Pellegrino finally decided to transition into a woman. Fulvia first realized that she had been born into the wrong body when she was just 15, but because she had a religious family, she kept her gender a secret. “I was living with my family who were very narrow-minded and very religious. I never manifested my will because it was impossible with my dad. He had three sons and he wanted three sons only,” Fulvia, who had previously been known as Fulvio, said. The turning point in Fulvia’s life came when she met her future wife Marisa. After the two married, she started to visit gay bars and began experimenting with cross dressing in private. These steps towards living as a woman, however, caused Fulvia much distress. To cover up her gender, Fulvia began to outwardly present herself as a hypermasculine man, buying firearms and cars. But 16 years into her marriage, she couldn’t live a lie any longer, and finally confessed to Marisa that she was a transgender woman. “Obviously Marisa lost if for a moment, it is not something that is easy to accept,” she said. “Today Marisa and I are nothing more than two sisters. We live together, we argue like two normal people but not like husband and wife.” Now Fulvia has spent in excess of $76,000 in a bid to obtain the “perfect” female body. As is the case for all transgender women, Fulvia’s transition into a female body began with hormone therapy. Male-to-female hormone therapy has effects which include a reduction in body hair and the development of breast tissue. But when Fulvia’s parents discovered that she was transitioning, they were outraged and did not accept her as their daughter. Their relationship broke down to the point where she was not allowed to attend her father’s funeral. “My dad asked my wife to sign a paper to send me into a psychiatric institution to make me change my mind,” Fulvia said. She received her first surgeries in 2004, which came in the form of breast implants, a nose job and a face lift. It was then that she began to chase the perfect female body and subsequently got three more breast augmentations, liposuction, fillers in her cheeks and lips and a $32,000 butt lift, The Mirror reported. Prior to transitioning, Fulvia had owned a restaurant, but she now no longer works. To cover the cost of her surgeries, she sold her guns, cars and home in France. She’s now supported entirely by Marisa, who works as a holistic therapist. Although Fulvia has the absolute support of her wife, the two have been ostracized in their hometown of Peveragno, Italy. Of course, this is not the first trans woman people have accused of being hooked on cosmetic procedures. Burlesque goddess Cassandra Cass regularly wows audiences with her jaw-dropping performances and endless confidence, but like Fulvia, her life has not always been so glamorous. The 33-year-old was raised as a farm boy by an overbearing father, but was immediately disowned by her family after revealing her desire to become a beautiful woman. Now a successful Hollywood performer and actress, Cassandra is urging everybody to stand up to discrimination and follow their dreams. Sadly, Fulvia is not surrounded with acceptance. “I am now the clown of Peveragno,” Fulvia said. “They point at me, they talk about me, they start inventing stories about me that I am a prostitute. My friends have all vanished – they didn’t accept me.” “I couldn’t be without Marisa and do what I do without her. She is always here with me.” Despite the fact that she has many critics, Fulvia is determined to chase her dream of obtaining the perfect female body. “I want to look like Allanah Starr, an American transgender porn star,” she revealed.
In the modern world, a number of prominent celebrities are held up as examples of the perfect female body. Now a transgender woman has turned herself into an uncanny Kim Kardashian lookalike. We wish Fulvia all the best on her quest to live as her authentic self.
