There is one reason I don’t like going in the ocean, and that reason is simple: sharks. The ocean contains a host of different creatures (and we haven’t even discovered half of them) that could possibly kill you, but the scariest of them all has to be great white sharks. Great white sharks have around 300 teeth, and their bite is four times more powerful than that of a lion or a tiger. Maybe it is because of the film “Jaws”, but for some reason, whenever I am in open water, I panic. If I’m on a boat, you could not pay me enough to get me in that water, it is literally not happening.
So, when I saw this story about a shark attack doing the rounds online, I instantly crapped myself. Leeanne Ericson, a Californian mom-of-three, described how she had to fight for her life after she was attacked by a great white shark during surfing trip with her boyfriend. Ericson underwent eight operations and had to learn to how to walk again after the shark tore a large chunk out of her leg. Speaking to Good Morning America, in a video which can be seen below, Ericson describes the horrific experience for the first time. The 35-year-old ended up missing “all of the back of her leg”, but incredibly she survived by scratching the shark’s eyes and creating a tourniquet out of the leash of the the surfboard that her boyfriend was using. As a result of her injuries, Ericson spent nine weeks in intensive care and had to undergo eight operations before she was released.
In a separate interview with Surfline, Ericson reveals how the incident happened and describes that she was actually swimming close to the edge of the shore before she was attacked by the shark. The mom told the publication how, as she swam near her boyfriend’s surfboard, she suddenly felt a bite on her leg and says that she knew what was happening straight away: “I knew what it was. I remember being pulled down and thinking about my kids. My brain shut off and went into fight or flight mode. I was trying to push the shark off of me. My hands moved down towards the eye and I started digging at it. I felt like I was digging at a cup of jello.” Dusty, Leanne’s boyfriend, says that he had paddled away from her when the attack took place. He describes how after hearing the screams, he turned around to help his girlfriend but she couldn’t be seen: “As I was paddling, I heard the scream. It was a piercing scream I’d never heard. And it disappeared, mid-scream. I turned around as quick as I could and there wasn’t even a ripple.” It’s a pretty harrowing story and it’s incredible that Leanne survived the attack, let alone is able to walk around and talk about it. If, for some bizarre reason, you want to see more shark related content, why not check outthis shocking video that shows a shark being dragged by a speedboat.
