(CNN)For years Barry Manilow kept his sexuality a trick, afraid of how fans may respond.

"I believed I would be frustrating them if they understood I was gay," the famous vocalist just recently informed People publication. "So I never ever did anything."

These days Manilow is not just out however on the cover of People speaking about his personal life and love of 39 years, his supervisor Garry Kief.

It's an unusual minute of openness for the 73-year-old star who informed the publication, "I'm so personal. I constantly have actually been."

Manilow stated he was focused primarily on his profession, that included hits such as "Mandy" and "Copacabana (At the Copa)," when he satisfied Kief, a TELEVISION executive, in 1978.

"I understood that this was it," Manilow stated. "I was among the fortunate ones. I was quite lonesome prior to that."
