The LA riots were a rude awakening for Korean-Americans

Los Angeles (CNN)Chang Lee grasped his fingers tighter around the weapon and shrieked at prospective looters from the roof of the little shopping center where he stood. The 35-year-old had actually never ever held a gun prior to the LA riots. Lighting up the blocks around him, Lee might smell the fires burning in Los Angeles' Koreatown.

"Where are the authorities? Where are the authorities?" Lee whispered over and over from his roof perch. Lee would not see police for 3 days-- just fellow Korean-Americans, who would be photographed by news firms appearing like armed militia in exactly what seemed a guerrilla race war on the streets.
It was April 30, 1992, and the city of angels raved in a 2nd day of robbery, armed attacks and arson in the wake of the acquittal of 4 white LAPD officers for usage of extreme force in the videotaped pounding of Rodney King.
