(CNN)The FBI is assisting to assess whether the deadly stabbing by a white trainee of a black trainee going to the University of Maryland will be prosecuted as a hate criminal offense, university authorities stated Sunday.

Richard Wilbur Collins III was with 2 buddies on the university's school in College Park when he was approached by a male and stabbed in the chest with a knife Saturday early morning, University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell informed press reporters.
