Working in a chocolate factory is a dream for many thanks to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Whilst there were more than a few accidents on Charlie’s tour of the factory, it’s logical to assume that these would not occur in a real-life confectionary establishment.

However, it has emerged today that a mom-of-one has died in a freak accident at a chocolate factory in Russia. Thirty-six-year-old Natalia Nemets had been cleaning a tank at the factory when it suddenly filled with molten caramel causing her to meet her untimely death. Reports in Russian media said that she was “boiled alive” by the caramel. Her colleagues in the factory realized that something was wrong when they noticed that Nemets was not at her assigned post. They then saw her legs poking out of the caramel in the tank. There was nothing they could do to save her. “She did not cry, no other noise was heard,” a worker said to Komsomolskaya Pravda. “She was cleaning the mixer when the caramel suddenly began to flow into the bowl. She got boiled alive, this is true.” “The caramel was removed from the giant bowl and only then was her body was taken out,” the worker added. “Besides the fact that it was boiling caramel, in the bowl there are moving blades that constantly mix the caramel.” Shockingly, this is the third death to have taken place this year at the factory in Stary Oskol, in the Belgorod region of Russia. Nemets was married and had a 10-year-old son, Ivan. Her sister Yulia said, “Her child is with us now.” Whilst news of the freak accident only broke today, it is reported to have take place on October 20th. However, managers at the Slavyanka confectionery factory tried to cover it up and kept workers silent until now by threatening to fire them. The accident was eventually revealed on social media and later confirmed by the factory. The cause of the accident is not yet known, however, the Komsomolskaya Pravda report revealed, “Two versions are being considered now – because of the high air temperature in the working room Natalia fainted and somehow fell into the bowl. “The second version is that she stumbled.” When heated, molten caramel can reach temperatures far higher than boiling water. The temperature of the caramel that killed Nemets would have depended on what it was going to be used for.

“Nobody could explain how it could happen,” Nemets’ colleague revealed. “Natalia did not have a single chance to survive.”

“A labor commission has already started investigating the case, and the first results are expected in 15 days,” Komsomolskaya Pravda reported. Specific details about the other two deaths at the chocolate factory this year are not currently known. However, it appears that confectionary establishments are as accident-prone as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory suggests. In December of last year, a Russian mom-of-two died in a vat of molten chocolate in Moscow after trying to retrieve her mobile phone. We wish Nemets’ family our sincere condolences during this extremely difficult time. Nemets’ death is the latest in a long line of freak accident deaths to have taken place this year. In May, a British zookeeper was killed after she unknowingly entered an enclosure with a tiger. These dream jobs are far more dangerous than we could ever imagine! It’s clear that there are certain establishments which need to rethink their safety policies in order to keep their employees safe.
