When I was growing up I was pretty obsessed with Cartoon Network. I was admittedly a not-so-little couch potato from a very young age and I developed a sort of addiction to all kinds of cartoons. My favourites were Dexter’s LaboratoryEd, Edd n Eddy and of course The Powerpuff Girls.

The Powerpuff Girls was particularly great because everything about the show subverted the typical cartoon conventions. I mean, the main characters were little girls who were created in a lab and happened to be kindergarteners! The premise alone is pretty spectacular, but the show was pure genius, and loved by boys and girls alike. However, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are a trio no longer, thanks to a recent introduction into the crimefighting team… I may be in my twenties now, but after hearing this recent news I’ve decided that I love Cartoon Network more than ever. And that’s because after going on a very long hiatus in 2005, they have introduced the trio’s long lost older sister. Her name is Blisstina, or Bliss for short, and she was introduced in the five-part movie, The Powerpuff Girls: The Power of Four on Sunday. Considering how popular the show is, introducing a new character with a substantial role can’t have been a decision that was taken lightly. Devoted fans are usually averse to change, especially a change on this scale. In fact, Bliss has a remarkably striking appearance with very long, bright turquoise hair and purple eyes as it was important that Cartoon Network create a powerful visual and make a good first impression on viewers. Bliss is not only the trio’s older sister but is in fact the very first black superhero in all of Townsville! Now, considering it’s 2017, and representation is very much a talking point in the media, Twitter certainly had something to say about the new addition. At first, it appears that Bliss is simply a figment of Blossom’s vivid imagination. But it is later revealed that she was Professor Utonium’s earlier attempt at an experiment to create the perfect little girl. However, the experiment went “wrong” and her superpowers became wildly uncontrollable, so she decided to leave Townsville for good. At first, a number of viewers weren’t exactly thrilled by the news considering it had already been revealed in the episode ‘Twisted Sister’ that the triplets already had a fourth sister called Bunny… but let’s try and forget her. However, when they realized that the move would involve transforming the Utoniums into an interracial family, many of the these viewers had a change of heart.

In fact, a lot of viewers agreed that Bliss look mighty familiar…

It is not often that such families are portrayed in film and television, especially in cartoons. It’s incredibly progressive, but then again in 2017 can we expected much less? Many viewers, such as this next Twitter user, feel that the move is a great way of introducing inclusivity and representation in a mainstream media. Personally, I was thrilled by the news and as a fan of the show, I can only imagine that the change will be a positive one. It’s fantastic for the development of the series and in terms of creating an atmosphere of inclusivity in the world of film and television.
