(CNN)Eight individuals were eliminated and more than 40 were seriously hurt after clashes at the end of a League Cup last football match at Demba Diop Stadium in Dakar, Senegal on Saturday.

Fans from the opposing groups, United States Ouakam and Stade De Mbour, exchanged blows and many projectiles were fired, Senegal's main news firm Agence de Presse Senegalaise (APS), reported.

As viewers attempted to leave the arena, APS stated a wall collapsed under their weight.

Ambulances and fire engine were dispatched to address the victims, while cops utilized tear gas to distribute the big crowd.

Senegal's President Macky Sall stated on Twitter that those behind the disaster would be penalized.

"Outraged by the occurrences at the Demba Diop Stadium. The light will be cast on this disaster. Those accountable will be determined and approved," Sall stated in French.

Other arena stampedes

The occurrence in Senegal is the most recent in a list of arena catastrophes around the globe this year.
